Last updated 28 October 2026. NilObs is SIRE 2.0 inspection prep at nilobs.com.
On the public site
The game and readiness check on the home page run in your browser. Their results stay in your browser (local storage) and nothing about you is sent to us. Opening the app itself needs a sign-in (Google, or a code sent to your email).
If you sign in
- With an email code: your email address. We send the code through our email provider (Resend or Cloudflare Email) and keep only a scrambled copy of the code, for 10 minutes. Signing in with Google later, with the same address, opens the same account.
- From Google: your Google account ID, name, email address and the link to your profile photo. Nothing else: we don't ask for access to your Gmail, contacts, Drive or anything in your Google account.
- Your profile: your role, ship type and, only if you add it, your company's name.
- Your NilObs data: XP, streak and badges, flashcard schedule, interview scores, inspection briefs, ratings, Ask NilObs chat history and close-out drafts, so they sync between your devices.
- Your wallet: your credits, plan and their history (what was spent on what, and when), kept on our server so they can't be lost or changed on a device.
- A sign-in cookie (nilobs_sid) that keeps you signed in for up to 30 days. We store only a scrambled (hashed) copy of it.
We use Google's information only to sign you in and show who is signed in. Our use of information received from Google follows the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Live updates, reminders, the pulse and leagues
- Live updates: headlines and links from public sources (accident reports, official guidance, maritime news), with short summaries written by our AI. Reading them sends nothing about you.
- Daily reminders (only if you turn them on): we keep your browser's push address, the hour you picked and your time zone, to send one reminder a day. The push itself goes through your browser's push service (Google, Apple, Mozilla or Microsoft) and carries no text; your phone then asks us what to say. Turn them off in Profile & progress at any time.
- Inspection pulse: a debrief you share is kept privately as you wrote it. Our AI provider (Anthropic) rewrites it without names of ships, people, companies or ports, and only that version is shown to other users, with your rough role (for example "Deck officer") and ship type. Email us to remove one.
- Weekly leagues: other users in your league see the XP you earned this week and your role with a number ("Second Officer 4821"). Your name appears only if you choose to show it.
Crews, fleet plans and certificates
- Crews (only if you make or join one): other members see your first name (or the name you chose for leagues), your role, the XP you earned this week, your streak and whether you did today's drill.
- Fleet plans: if you join a crew that's on a fleet plan, its owner (usually your company) pays for your seat and sees your name, email address, role, when you were last active, streak, drills, XP this week, how many AI inspector sessions you've done and your practice scores by topic. They never see your AI chats, answers or photos. NilObs tells you this before you join, and you can leave the crew at any time.
- Certificates (only if you claim one): the name you choose, your role and the date are on a page at nilobs.com/c/ and the certificate's number, which anyone with the link can open. That's how an employer checks it. Deleting your account removes it.
Who can see your account
The NilObs team can see account details in a private admin dashboard, to run, support and improve the service: your name, email, sign-up and last-visit dates, role, ship type, company if you gave one, XP and streak, credits and plan, what credits were spent on (for example "Ask NilObs" or "Photo check") and payments, whether reminders are on, and the de-identified version of debriefs you shared. The dashboard does not show what you typed, asked or photographed.
The AI features
- Questions, answers you type or speak, and photos you send to Photo check go to Anthropic (Claude) to produce the reply. Photos are shrunk on your phone first, which removes location data, and NilObs doesn't store them; a small thumbnail stays in your browser only.
- When the AI inspector speaks, the question's text goes to Rumik to make the audio.
- An observation you paste into the Close-out helper goes to Anthropic the same way, after the app takes out ship names (MT/MV …), IMO numbers and email addresses. Your drafts are kept with your progress so you can open them again.
- Please keep names of people, ships and companies out of what you type and photograph.
Where it lives
The site and your account data run on Cloudflare (Workers and D1). Like any website, Cloudflare handles your IP address to deliver pages; we use it only to limit how often the AI can be called.
Payments
Payments are handled by Razorpay. You enter your card, UPI or bank details in Razorpay's checkout, never ours, and we never see or store them. To start a payment we pass Razorpay your name and email address so its checkout can fill them in; anything else it asks for (such as a mobile number) goes to Razorpay directly. Razorpay tells us whether the payment went through. We keep a record of each payment (what was bought, the amount, the date and Razorpay's payment reference) for our accounts and to handle refunds. Receipts are shown only to the account that paid. If you turn on auto-renew, Razorpay holds the UPI, card or bank mandate; we keep only the subscription's reference, which plan it's for, its status and when it was charged. Razorpay keeps its own records under its privacy policy.
Deleting your data
Signed in, open Profile & progress → Delete account (or tap your photo at the top, then Your profile). Your account, sign-in sessions, saved progress, wallet, reminders, shared debriefs, crew memberships and certificate are erased from our database straight away. Crews you own are closed. We keep two things: the payment records above (with no name or email attached), and a one-way scrambled code made from your Google account ID (or your email address, if you signed up with a code), so that signing up again doesn't give out the free starting credits twice. The code can't be turned back into your ID or email. Signing out instead keeps your account and clears this device. You can also email us to ask for a copy or deletion.
